American Progressivism is defined as a broadly based movement that reached the height of influence in the early twentieth century, that was largely middle class and reformist in nature. Progressivism arose as a response to the vast changes brought about by modernization, such as the growth of large corporations and railroads, and the shifts within international politics. „… the Progressive movement suffered from a contradiction between humanistic values and nationalist aspirations, which, if not inherent, had certainly beset other democracies from the time of the wars of the French Revolution. In arguing for a positive national government, the followers of Croly ultimately lost sight of the distinction between the state as an instrument and the state as an end. The consequences were not only the endorsement of an imperialistic foreign policy but the death of the Progressive party in the interest of their nationalist zeal.“ (siehe: Leuchtenburg, William E.: Progressivism and Imperialism: The Progressive Movement and American Foreign Policy,1898-1916, in: The Mississippi Valley Historical Review, Vol. 39, No. 3 (1952), S. 483-504.)
