- Contents
- In this seminar we will explore discourses on terrorism and counter-terrorism in the post-9/11 US. We will try to assess in what ways 9/11 and the ensuing ‘War on Terror’ have influenced and shaped the political and cultural landscape by looking at a variety of texts, ranging from legal documents (for example the Patriot Act) to cultural production such as Hollywood movies, novels, and television series. We will discuss pop-cultural products with regard to their representation of the War on Terror and emerging narratives of security and legitimization. Moreover, we will examine these texts with regard to (re)-emerging American myths, gender dynamics, narratives of heroization and victimization, and their negotiation of states of emergency.
