Contents
In this seminar, we will consider how American metropolises, from New York City to Los Angeles, have been depicted and visualized in a selection of literary works. Paying attention to both aesthetic and affective forms and strategies of representation, we will examine how narratives of the American metropolis are framed, coded and represented in literature. Some topics that we will focus on include: depictions of modernity and urbanism; the city as palimpsestic space; contested urban identities; “multiculturalism”; racial/urban segregation and exclusion; urban poverty and precarious forms of urban housing; crime and the underbelly of the metropolis; cultures of consumption; the city as a space of insurgency and resistance; new urban topographies.
