The "Department of Computer Sciences" was founded in 1966 under the name "Institute of Mathematical Machines and Data-Processing" as part of the newly founded Faculty of Engineering Sciences, making it one of the oldest of its kind. Since 1972 the department has been growing continually so that it now comprises twelve sub-departments and a research group in cooperation with the Faculty of Business Administration, Economics and Social Sciences. Six of the sub-departments are housed in the "Wolfgang-Händler-Building", named after Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. h.c.mult. Wolfgang Händler, holder of the first chair of Computer Science in Erlangen and founder of the department.

Teaching

The first courses in computer science, allowing the students to eventually graduate with a German diploma, were held in the winter term 1996/70. In 1997, due to an initiative of the Department of Computer Science, courses in "Computational Engineering" were added, with lectures held in English and graduation with a Master degree. In the year 2000 it was turned into a bilingual Bachelor-Master-Program. Since 2003 the department has also been sharing responsibilities with the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Information Technology for the new course of study in "Information and Communication Technology". A special course of studies for future computer science teachers for all kind of schools also started in the winter term 2003/04.
Information about the lectures offered at the moment can be found in the UnivIS information system.
