- Inhalt
- Phase transitions are ubiquitous in nature. The melting of solids and the boiling of liquids are the most well known examples, but a host of others exist both in the classical and quantum domains, e.g. magnetic and superconducting phase transitions, ordering in liquid crystals, and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. A modern classification of phase transitions recognizes two broad categories, discontinuous and continuous phase transitions. To the former belong transitions where the symmetry changes abruptly, for example the melting of a solid. Continuous phase transitions are
remarkable in that they share many universal characteristics. Understanding this type of phase transition involves many of the most important concepts in modern physics: spontaneous symmetry breaking, the order parameter, and the renormalisation group.
The aim of this course is first to give an overview of phenomenological aspects, then to introduce the Landau theory of
phase transitions and some of the key models (such as the Ising model), before moving on to the renormalisation group and continuous phase transitions.
