- Inhalt
- Popular culture has received much attention within the field of cultural studies. Within the area of music, genres like punk and rap were clearly privileged, while other genres have only recently moved into focus. This seminar will concentrate on heavy metal, a musical genre that has remained very popular for many decades. Given the special emphasis placed by musicians and fans alike on aspects like authenticity, virtuosity, and stage performances, this seminar will concentrate on performativity and theatricality, asking how gendered identities, masculinities, violence, and fantasy are squared with the genre''''s insistence on trueness and realism. While we will also include musical features, the main focus will be on the analysis of visual and textual discourses, also extending to band movies and documentary film. Electronic readings will be made available by the start of the semester. In preparation for the seminar, students are invited to view Sam Dunn’s film Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey (DVD, 2006).
