- Inhalt
- In the eighteenth century, Enlightenment philosophy had begun to change the face of British literature and philosophy. The churchfathers' earlier warnings against "idle curiosity" were being replaced by the paradigm of empiricism; individuals were encouraged to advance their knowledge of the world by the perception of the senses, with reason as their guide.
The growing impact of the New Science, as promoted by Francis Bacon from the 1640s, led to the foundation of the Royal Society,"revolutionizing scientific method and the dispersal of knowledge" (Norton Anthology of English Literature). One of the primary functions of literature was to educate readers by means of essayistic reflection or satiric exposure of common vices, criticizing thesocial and political shortcomings of the "old order". Yet the first museums established in the 18th century were exclusive and met only the needs of an intellectual elite.
This seminar focuses on forms, discourses, dispersal, and controversy of knowledge in 18th-century British literature.Students wishing to attend should be prepared to give a short presentation on a topic of their choice and a three-minute recap of a previous course meeting. It is strongly recommended to start your mandatory reading before the beginning of the winter semester.
