- Inhalt
- "There are many reasons why novelists write, but they all have one thing in common: a need to create an alternative world" (John Fowles). This seminar will set out to explore some of these "alternative worlds" as well as some major currents and topics in British literature of the last 30 years.
How do we seize the past if we already fail to comprehend an increasingly complex present? Can we trust that our sense of 'reality' and 'identity' is our own, not the one shaped by the images and fictions created by others? What happens to the taboos of sexuality and death in a society that prides itself on knowing no taboos? Do we still have 'faith'? What happens if we realize that we have placed that faith not into a holy book, but the ravings of a half-crazed London cab driver named Dave?
As the reading load for this course is relatively demanding, you are advised to read at least Waterland before the beginning of the winter semester. Some reading advice for The Book of Dave is available from my web site http://www.simone-broders.de . Students are expected to give a short seminar presentation.
