- Inhalt
- The 'Long' 18th century is permeated by a sense that the one sure thing is change. The new science that for the first time makes knowledge available to the public, the strange countries discovered by explorers, as well as the increasing complexity of the political and cultural landscape are among the topics reflected in a new genre emerging from the 1720s that will remain a "work in progress" well beyond the year 1800: the novel.
This seminar is going to examine these changes in a selection of 18th-century novels, from Swift's famous satire Gulliver's Travels to Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, an ironic take on her contemporaries' eager consumption of Gothic stories.
As the reading load for this course is relatively demanding, you are advised to read the longer texts (at least Gulliver's Travels and Caleb Williams) before the beginning of the winter semester. Course materials will be available from my web site http://www.simone-broders.de by mid-October. Students are expected to give a short seminar presentation.
