- Inhalt
- G.B. Shaw is one of those "larger than life" figures in British Literary History. Awarded with the Nobel Prize in 1925 he is credited for having turned British theatre away from the melodrama of the last century and turned in into a theatre of ideas.
While for the large part of the 19th theatre presented a means of escaping reality, Shaw brought the political and social reality of British society on stage. Shaw's social criticism is a reflection of his own world-view developed in an imaginary dialogue with the leading philosophical trends of his time.
While his plays are deeply rooted in the social and philosophical discourses of the early 20th century, the questions he raises on the role of the individual in society give his plays a timeless quality.
In this seminar we will discuss the craft of Shaw's theatre, especially the affect it has on the audience and how it is reached.. We will then track the trace philosophers such as Hegel and Nietzsche left in his work and try to situate it in the political discourse of his time.
Participants are expected to take over short presentations.
