- Das PS Literature gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:

- Inhalt
- In this seminar we will trace the development of utopian and dystopian thought and fiction - the idea of an ideal world and its complete opposite - from Thomas More's early modern text Utopia (1516) and Francis Bacon's scientific utopia The New Atlantis (1627) to H. G. Wells's The Time Machine (1895), which can be seen as a forerunner of science fiction literature, Aldous Huxley's (1932) and George Orwell's (1949) popular dystopian visions of the 20th century that reflect the atrocities and oppressions of a totalitarian regime, and Kazuo Ishiguro's contemporary dystopian novel Never Let Me Go (2005), which envisions a world inhabited by humans and their genetic clones. Taking into account the socio-political, technological and epistemological contexts - the respective contemporary realities for which these texts have provided an alternative literary vision - we will analyse the philosophical and political implications of utopian and dystopian thought, identify genre-specific characteristics and explore the fascination literary thought experiments continue to exert.

You should have finished reading at least two of the four novels (Wells, Orwell, Huxley, Ishiguro) by the beginning of the semester.
