- Inhalt
- After situating the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge within literary history and discussing the sociohistorical background of the early 19th century this course intends to analyze Coleridge’s poetry on a stylistic level and in regard to central themes and motifs. We will therefore enter new imaginative spaces, investigate transcendental and supernatural elements in his poetry and discuss the influence of opium and mind expansion on his monologues, meditations and psychedelic vision. We will take a closer look at irrational and symbolic worlds of imagery that contradict conventional argumentative, rhetorical patterns and are characteristic features of Coleridge's poems. The consideration of generic classifications and subgenres of poetry as well as the discussion of categories such as authenticity, subjectivity, intertextuality, genius and imagination in the Romantic period will also be a part of this seminar.
Since Coleridge’s focus of attention was not set exclusively on poetry but on drama, political journalism, literary criticism and essayism as well, we will also deal with his prose and biographical writing 'Biographia Literaria' in terms of his contribution to literary criticism and his philosophical ideas. Coleridge’s evaluation of Wordsworth’s poetry as well as his influence on later poets will be additional topics for discussion.
