- Inhalt
- Martin Amis is one of the authors of contemporary English Literature who have gained some kind of celebrity status and whose name could be recently found more often in tabloid headlines - including alleged islamophobic comments post 9/11 and merciless Katie Price-bashings - than on bestsellers lists. In this seminar, however, we will focus our attention on his writing and enter dark and gloomy worlds, in order to discuss his sometimes shocking, often threatening and mostly disturbing narratives. After analyzing central themes in his writing (such as the sexual revolution, gender roles, nuclear weapons, capitalism, September 11, satire, literary criticism) as well as distinctive generic classifications, we will take a closer look at his essay collections and focus on Martin Amis as a critic. We will further situate his work within the context of English Literature from the 1970s until today and discuss his special relationship with the United States and American writers.
