Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
"ThematischesKombinationsmodul" (academic courses) belongs to the following module in BA English and American Studies (new):
Zwischenmodul I: Thematisches Kombinationsmodul. Admission requirements: Basismodul Linguistics & Basismodul Literature

Inhalt
The course will focus on the historicity of Renaissance disourses, investigating Renaissance plays and poems, but also texts in the context of the battle of the sexes with its dashing wit combats from the point of view of literary and cultural studies (Böhm) as well as linguistics (Thim). From the literary and cultural angle, historicity will be explored by first of all establishing some of the central concerns of the period, and by reflecting on the historical differences between the 16th and the 21st centuries. The linguistic part of the course will deal with Early Modern English with regard to both the structural peculiarities of the language and to contemporary discussions concerning the role of English; the development of a Standard variety in the period will be of particular interest in this respect. It will mainly be the role of pronunciation that establishes the link between the two courses. Ideally - if students are interested - the course will culminate in either producing a CD or a film, capturing our Shakespeare performances in early modern English.
Texts: Primary texts (Böhm)
William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew (Arden Edition)
John Fletcher, The Tamer Tamed Thomas Middleton/Thomas Dekker, The Roaring Girl
selected texts from the battle of the sexes (made available at StudOn) Background reading for linguistics: Charles Barber, Early Modern English, 2nd ed, 1997. (for a quick preparatory overview of the history of English, see The English Language: A Historical Introduction by Charles Barber, Joan C. Beal and Philip A. Shaw, 2nd ed. 2009)
