- Hauptseminar
2 SWS
Zeit und Ort: Do 10:15 - 11:45, KH 0.015
- Inhalt
- The Middle English period has often been characterized as the ‘dialect age’ in the history of the language: after the Norman Conquest, there was no standard variety of English, and Middle English texts offer a unique opportunity to study dialectal variation and change. In this class fundamental concepts of dialectology and of language change will be introduced, and we will look at the major linguistic developments from the end of the Old English period up to and including the beginnings of Modern Standard English at the end of the Middle English period, on the basis of a representative selection of texts from the 11th to the 15th century.Participants need not necessarily have attended an introduction to Middle English; an introduction to Old English, for example, should also serve as a very good preparation for this seminar. Background reading: J.A. Burrow & T. Turville-Petre, A Book of Middle English, 3rd ed, Oxford: Blackwell, 2004.
