- Inhalt
- Ever since John Sinclair introduced large-scale computer corpora into modern linguistics, the study of phraseological language experienced a real renaissance. But corpus linguists were not the first to discover that there might be more to a language than grammatical rules mixed with lexical information. Ferdinand deSaussure, for example, developed in his Course in general linguistcs (1916/1966) the idea of the mind, which “[…] takes a short cut – and applies [a] concept to the whole cluster of signs, which then becomes a simple unit” (ibid.: p. 177).
After a general introduction into the field of phraseology, we will therefore discuss a selection of approaches towards phraseological phenomena, reaching from statistical definitions to psycholinguistic theories. In a second, more applied part of the course, we will then analyse different genres and texts with respect to their phraseology and examine how idiomatic language works in various situations, like conversations, media and the language classroom.
