- a) Texts: Jane Austen, Emma; Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South. Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones’s Diary, David Lodge, Nice Work
b) Films: Clueless, North and South
Most 19th-century novels written by women seem to be firmly based on the conventions of the 'female romance' focussing on choice of partner. A closer look at some of the texts will show, however, that women novelists used the 'love-interest' elements for various purposes: to discuss social and economic problems; to voice hidden/forbidden (female) desires; to subvert contemporary ideologies of marriage and gender roles. Modern rewritings and adaptations of the novels can be discussed in the context of heritage film traditions, the low-brow mass-market romance, chick lit/flick as well as the postmodern pastiche.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the relevant texts before each class. All participants are expected to enrol for a seminar presentation which should last between ten and fifteen minutes including time for questions. A course syllabus, a bibliography and additional material will be made available online at the beginning of the semester.
