- Inhalt
- The ethical turn in the humanities can be looked upon as a countermovement against the playfulness and arbitrariness of postmodernism which characterized novels and dramas produced in the final three decades of the last century. A new awareness of ethical questions has induced many authors to write novels and dramas in which political, religious, philosophical or moral questions are negotiated. In this seminar we will concentrate on the most significant examples of “Littérature Engagée”. After studying the history of ethical thinking in the contexts of philosophy, religion, aesthetics and literary theory we will analyse the following texts: Sebastian Barry, The Secret Scripture (2008), Ian McEwan, Saturday (2005), Julian Barnes, Nothing To Be Frightened Of (2008) and The Sense of an Ending (2011), and Joseph O’Neill Netherlands (2008).
