- Inhalt
- This seminar explores representations of anarchy and anarchism in British culture since the late 18th century. Anarchism is not just a political doctrine or a philosophical stance; it has achieved iconic status in some youth- and sub-cultures and has served as a powerful ‘other’ of bourgeois respectability. Anarchy has threatened to dissolve established social structures, cultural hierarchies – and literary theories (such as New Criticism). It has also provided a prominent literary motif and a discourse informing poetry and novels, comic books, films, and popular music.Amongst the texts we will consider in this Hauptseminar (B.A.: Literary, Cultural, British and General Studies; Lehramtstudiengänge; some Master degree programmes) are selections from William Godwin’s Political Justice (1793), the poetry of his son-in-law, Percy Bysshe Shelley (especially “The Mask of Anarchy”, 1819), and of ''anarchist poet'' Herbert Read. We will read two novels – William Morris’s News from Nowhere (1890) and Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent (1907) –, study Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of Conrad (Sabotage, 1936), and analyse V for Vendetta, both the graphic novel (Alan Moore & David Lloyd, 1982-8) and the film version (Warner Bros., 2006). Musical accompaniment will be provided by The Sex Pistols (1976).
