- In the First Folio (1623), the section "Histories" comprises a group of ten plays. Although the generic label was first applied by the editors of the Folio, it does seem justified in that (perhaps with the exception of King John), the plays collected under the heading all deal with a specific part of English history: A not-so-distant past that seems to have retained some immediate relevance for an Elizabethan audience. The ''Histories'', specifically the two tetralogies (York and Lancaster), can be understood as inquiries into the origins of the social fabric, the nature of kingship and political power. This seminar will analyze a selection of these plays (Richard II and 1 Henry IV; 3 Henry VI and Richard III) and focus on questions of genre and canonization, on social and political discourses in the plays and on the social functions of the actual performances of the plays in Shakespeare''s time. Most importantly, perhaps, the plays will be analyzed as plays about history: of different, and often competing, concepts of the past and forms of remembering. Julius Caesar, although labelled a “tragedy”, is thrown in for good measure – and because it allows us to focus on the use of Roman history in Shakespeare’s discussions of political power.
