Inhalt
This course will serve as an introduction to one of the most controversial of critical terms, ''ideology'', and the ways this concept is dealt with in a variety of critical approaches, including Marxist, Neo- and Post-Marxist ones. ''Ideology'' has often been reduced to meanings such as "false consciousness" or the (''false'') ideas that help legitimate a dominant political power, but in contemporary cultural studies, the term has received a much wider range of definitions. According to a list drawn up by Terry Eagleton, its diverse meanings range from a body of ideas characteristic of particular social groups to the basis for personal or group "identity" – or it can simply mean "semiotic closure" (Ideology: An Introduction). The focus of the seminar will be on how the different concepts of ideology can be used in the analysis of contemporary popular culture (including film). In the process, we will also consider the application of related critical concepts and terminology such as hegemony, interpellation, subjectivity, consciousness, subversion/containment, and class.
