The Brontë Myth
- Dozent/in
- Rosa Karl, M.A.
- Angaben
- Hauptseminar
2 SWS
Zeit und Ort: Mi 12:15 - 13:45, C 601
- Inhalt
- "The Brontës, like Shakespeare, are a literary industry as well as a collection of literary texts, and it [will be] worth asking why this should be so and how it came about." (Terry Eagleton, Myths of Power, xix) This is, of course, only one of many aspects we will address in the seminar: we will take closer looks at the classical texts, but also at such phenomena as visiting Brontë Country, fandom, biography and biofiction, as well as the 'Brontës at the movies'.
Texts you need to have read by the beginning of the course (!): Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre; Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights; Anne Brontë, Agnes Grey. For easy reference in class, please make sure to get the Oxford's World's Classics editions! Other Texts to be purchased: Jasper Fforde, The Eyre Affair; Mardi McConnochie, Coldwater.
