- Inhalt
- Lots of bodice ripping displayed on the paperback cover has given the popular romance genre a bad name since the 1970s. It has been dismissed as ‘trash’ and ‘women’s pornography’. However, sales figures prove that even today the genre is flourishing in its many forms. In this seminar, we will be looking at ways to define the popular romance and trace the genre’s development from its historical origin to the present day. Moreover, we will be examining contemporary marketing strategies as well as the literary and discursive practices that shape the popular romance and the resulting reading experience. Concerning the interpretation of content, the main foci in the four core texts, including one film, will be issues of sexuality, gender and race and their representations in the subgenres of Regency and desert romance.
