- Inhalt
- Experienced readers of Gothic texts know that some motifs have always been haunting their pages: Villainous monks, supernatural forces, treacherous foreigners etc. are a staple of the genre.
In this seminar we will look at the way these various threats and dangers are portrayed as the "dark side" in a myriad of dichotomies: Good and evil; man and woman; British and foreign; Protestant and Catholic and so on. We will try to gain insight into how race, gender, class and religion are depicted and how the texts reflect the scientific, political and social debates of their time. Charlotte Brontë's Villette and Bram Stoker's Dracula and the similar and contrasting ways they go about establishing these patterns will be our main focus.
