- Shakespeare’s Last Plays
Is it at all significant whether a play happens to be amongst the ‘last’ that a playwright produced? If it did not make a difference to the audiences of a first performance, what difference does it make now? (And what happens if a very last play is then discovered to be not quite the last one after all?) In the case of Shakespeare, who (like Elvis) has never really died but continues to be with us, culturally, such questions gain an added significance.
As a generic label, ‘last plays’ ties theatrical performance and meaning-production firmly to concepts of authorship and of biography. This seminar will look at five of Shakespeare’s later plays and consider what role myths of authorship have played in their critical analysis. In a larger sense, we will also consider their role in the construction of the Shakespeare canon and in the cultural significance of ‘Shakespeare’ as a cultural myth and commodity. We will focus on one of Shakespeare’s ‘last’ tragedies, Coriolanus, on two of the late ‘romances’ (another label that was retroactively applied to the plays in the 19th century), and on two of the plays that came too late, Henry VIII and Cardenio.Texts: Coriolanus, Cymbeline, The Tempest, Cardenio, and Henry VIII.
