- Inhalt
- “The appearance of the female detective in English fiction during the nineteenth century was a result of a complex intersection of legal, social, moral, institutional and gendered practices”, argues Joseph A. Kestner in a monograph entitled Sherlock’s Sisters (2003: 1). This proseminar will investigate the relevance of gender in the genre of detective fiction and will focus on constructions of female detective figures in literature and adaptations in film, radio and audiobooks in order to shed light on the specific cultural and medial environments which made the female detective emerge as a cultural phenomenon. Starting with the – allegedly – first ever female detective novel by Andrew Forrester, we will trace the history of the female detective, focusing on a selection of further texts ranging from the only woman who managed to outwit Sherlock Holmes, via the elderly spinster detective Miss Marple, to lesbian sleuths in the cultural climate of the 1980s, to finish with Precious Ramotswe of Alexander McCall’s No One Ladies’ Detective Agency. Drawing on major insights in gender studies, adaptation studies and concepts of intermediality, we will explore the ways in which gendered practices of detection differ in different political and medial contexts in Britain.
