Inhalt
Lentini had invented it, and Petrarch remained all but quiet, thought it for thoughts on love quite fit, his songs were introduced by Wyatt. Sidney sang of stars and Stella, made a sequence of his song. Shax was a productive fella, for boys and girls he felt quite strong. With matter much less physical, John Donne was wholly different, his poems were quite quizzical, John Milton thought his light all spent. From the Dark Ages to this day, the sonnet lives, jippieeiey!
In this course, we are going to trace the history of the English sonnet from its introduction by Wyatt to the present day in order to shed light on how a relatively stable literary form adapted to differing cultural and economic contexts. Focusing on the early modern period, Romanticism, the Victorian Age, Modernism and 'Postmodernism', we will not only analyse the poems themselves, but will also explore the sonnet with regard to literary theory and cultural contexts. Does the sonnet have specific connotations concerning gender, race and class, for instance? In what ways and for what purposes can the form be appropriated? What other genres harbour the sonnet? How do translations comment on the role of the genre? What, for example, does it mean when Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 is recast as "wie krass schön du bist konkret"? To answer questions such as these, the course will draw on literary and cultural history, literary theory and analysis.
