- Inhalt
- The aim of this seminar is to explore the various forms and functions of Victorian fantasy literature. We will place individual texts in their context within the historical development of subgenres (such as fairy tale and gothic or horror novel) and within contemporary cultural discourses (e.g.: social reform, capitalism, ‘deviant’ sexualities, 'degeneration' etc.). We will also examine how the texts have been read by modern critics and recreated in modern film in order to approach the question of the role Victorian fantasy fiction plays in the cultural imaginary.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the texts before each class. All participants are expected to enroll for a short oral presentation. A course syllabus, a bibliography and additional material will be made available online at the beginning of the semester.
