- Als HS Literature gehört die Veranstaltung in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:

Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs auch eine "Independent Study Group" angeschlossen.
- Inhalt
- This class will provide a survey over the works of two of the most seminal authors of US-American Literature whose writing marked the transition from the 19th to the 20th Century. Among other things we will contextualize the works of Henry James and Edith Wharton historically within their contemporary field of cultural production and notions of fiction writing. We will critically investigate the Novel of Manners in the light of specifically North American as well as transatlantic genre debates which brought forth but also contest Eurocentric discourses:"For one thing…there are no manners in America to observe, compared, that is, with Europe." (Richard Chase)
Participation in this class requires a willingness to read extensively, to critically engage with longer fictional texts, and to actively participate in class discussion. To ascertain a common base of textual knowledge for in-class discussion, participants are expected to have purchased and read the novels marked in StudOn for pre-semester reading. (A brief quiz at the beginning of the semester will test for basic familiarity with the texts indicated; passing this test will be prerequisite for further attendance)
In order to receive credit for the course, a final 20-page paper is due by March 15.
