- Dieses Seminar kann als Haupt- oder Proseminar belegt werden. Als Hauptseminar gehört es zu folgenden Studiengängen und Modulen:
MA North American Studies: Module 4,5,7,8
MA The Americas/Las Américas: Modul 4
MA Literaturstudien intermedial und interkulturell: Module 4,5,7,8 BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul A Literature oder Culture (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul II)
Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs eine Independent Study Group angeschlossen. Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Hauptmodul L-GYM Literature (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul Literature) Alte Studiengänge (Studienbeginn vor WS 07/08): Hauptstudium (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenprüfung) Als Proseminar kann der Kurs im Studiengang American Studies als "Politics and Culture Proseminar" (Modul 201; 5 ECTS), im Studiengang General Studies als "Proseminar Culture" (Zwischenmodul II) (Modul 211; 6 ECTS) belegt werden.
- Inhalt
- This course provides a general introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Asian American Studies. It covers key events and debates in Asian American history, including the first wave of immigration in the 19th century, the exclusion era, the experiences of Asian Americans during World War II, and the Asian American movement in the 1960s. It examines how these socio-historical developments have shaped Asian American culture and how they are represented in literary and cultural texts. Drawing on a wide range of material - from historical sources to contemporary literary and (pop) cultural texts - we will also analyze (self-)representations of Asian Americans and address a variety of issues such as the model minority myth, racial constructions and stereotypes, social movements as well as immigration and citizenship. The goal of this reading intensive class is to offer students an overview of Asian American Studies, the history of Asian Americans, and Asian American literary and cultural production.
