- Inhalt
- Beginning with The Sopranos, a sizable number of American "quality" television series predominantly although not exclusively housed by a small number of networks (such as HBO and Showtime) have been and still are produced. These series are characterized by unprecedented production costs concomitant with high production standards, the casting of actors often already well-established in the television and even film industries (that is, Hollywood), a high degree of formal innovation, and a narrative complexity largely absent from television series of previous decades. In this seminar, we will analyze a number of such contemporary TV series in regard to the cultural work they perform along- and outside of questions of their aesthetic merits in relation to their representations of US-American history and contemporary US-American society. Students intending to take part in the seminar should familiarize themselves with the first seasons of Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-present), Deadwood (HBO, 2004-06), Mad Men (AMC, 2007-present), True Blood (HBO, 2008-present), and Weeds (Showtime, 2005-present).
Reading material will be made available at the beginning of the semester via studon. Course requirements:
Short presentation (with handout); seminar paper.
