- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Das Hauptseminar gehört in den folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
MA North American Studies - Culture and Literature: Modul 4,5,7 oder 8
MA The Americas/Las Américas: Modul 4
MA Literaturstudien – intermedial und interkulturell: Module 4,5,7 und 8
BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul A Literature oder Culture. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul II)
Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs auch eine "Independent Study Group" angeschlossen.
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Hauptmodul L-GYM Literature. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul Literature)
Alte Studiengänge (Studienbeginn vor WS 07/08): Hauptstudium. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenprüfung)
- Inhalt
- Immigration is one of the most important dimensions of American society. Focussing on selected major ethnic groups, we will examine and discuss various aspects of social and cultural interaction between the newcomers and the host society. Addressing specific questions, we shall be able to compare similarities and differences among these groups with regard to their respective roles in the history of and current state of immigration and ethnicity in the United States.
Requirements:
Active participation in discussions, a topical presentation in class, a term paper (15-20 pages).
Regular attendance required, a maximum of two absences is permissible. The presentation must be sent to me (daniel.gossel@ifa.fau.de) at least one day in advance. The working language in class is English.
The term paper can be written either in English or in German after consultation with the instructor. Essential reading: Students are requested to read Roger Daniels, Coming to America. A History of Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life, 2nd Edition Harper Perennial 2002 (Paperback c. €13). Additional literature:
Stephen Thernstrom, Ann Orlov, Oscar Handlin (eds.), Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press 1980. Advice on further literature and useful websites will be given in class.
