- Inhalt
- This seminar focuses on the Gothic as a particular narrative and aesthetic tradition concerned with issues of violence and that which has been silenced from history or hidden from public view. The Gothic taps into fears of the unknown, the irrational, and the supernatural in ways that can be both pleasurable and disconcerting. It addresses fears of identity loss, and it blurs boundaries between the self and other, living and dead, good and evil, madness and sanity, wilderness and civilization.
Our readings range from Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland (1798), a dark tale of domestic murder and religiously inspired madness, to Toni Morrison’s haunted masterpiece Beloved (1987). Tracing the development of the genre through literary history, we will investigate concepts of the gothic and the grotesque, of terror, horror, and the uncanny. Texts by Washington Irving, E.A. Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Frank Norris, Edith Wharton, H.P. Lovecraft, Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, Joyce Carol Oates and others will be available as part of the course reader on StudOn.
