- Die Vorlesung gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
MA North American Studies: Literature and Culture: Überblicksmodul (für MA Studierende ist eine Übung zum Thema angeschlossen) BA English and American Studies (neu): Hauptmodul B Literature und Culture Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Optionsmodul L-GYM Literature.(Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul Literature) Alte Studiengänge (Studienbeginn vor WS 07/08): Hauptstudium. - Inhalt
- This lecture offers a survey of 20th century American literature and culture, the so-called ‚American Century’. Beginning with the idea of future shock articulated by Henry Adams in his early 20th century autobiography and W.E.B DuBois' perceptively projected "problem of the color line," this lecture will introduce significant selections from the enormously diverse body of 20th century American writing from its modernist beginnings, via postmodernism and neorealism to the recent turn of the century. Through the lens of literary texts and other cultural products, we will study reflections on the US becoming a modern, hegemonic, and an increasingly fractured nation.
The lecture closes with the submission of a written portfolio. All materials will be available on StudOn at the beginning of the semester.
