Please note that the FIRST SESSION for this seminar will be Dec 2, 2014. We will then proceed with weekly three-hour sessions. (While this is an admittedly unusual schedule, experience has shown that the extended hours are conducive to concentrated work with the texts and allow more flexibility in discussions.)

- Before love and romance have become central aspects of marriage over the course of the 20th century, considerations of property and propriety framed marital matters. Particularly for women, for the most part unable to otherwise participate in the marketplace, failure to marry or failure of marriage could lead to precarious economic situations.
This seminar will therefore approach texts concerned with marriages, love and scandal from an economic perspective. The course will introduce students to canonical 19th century literature (The Scarlett Letter, Washington Square, and The Awakening), their depiction of the identy and agency of (future) wives as well as the legal and cultural frameworks which shaped such literary production. Via discussion of these novels and other primary sources such as legal documents and magazine articles, we will investigate the entanglement of gender, sexuality, family and money in literary treatments of one of the crucial institutions in US-American society.
