- Inhalt
- Focusing on the genre of the short story, this course provides an extensive overview of American literature in the nineteenth century with major emphasis on the American Renaissance, Realism, Naturalism, and the Local Color Movement. The syllabus is comprised of selected, representative texts from the period, which highlight the rise of the short story as more than simply a shorter version of the novel but as a distinct art form. The course will address the cultural historical circumstances of short story production and reception, and we will discuss critical writing concerning social and aesthetic issues, problems of definition and questions of narrative technique.
Course reading will cover work by such authors as Irving, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Davis, Twain, Crane, Stowe, Harris, James, Gilman, Chopin and others. Students are expected to manage a substantial reading load, to deliver short presentations or submit a response paper for in-class discussion, and to participate actively.Buy/read in advance: Rebecca Harding Davis: Life in the Iron Mills (Feminist Press); H.
