- Inhalt
- This seminar will examine the recent “turn” tothe transnational in American Studies. We will analyze a range of scholarlytexts in our field that have sought to establish the transnational perspectiveas a critical move beyond the confines of the US-American nation and itsconcomitant, exceptionalist myths, drawing attention to historical, cultural,and political entanglements and interdependencies of the US with Europe, the“other” Americas, Africa, and Asia. These texts include Randolph Bourne’s 1916 article “Transnational America,” proclamations of the transnational turn byeminent Americanists in the 2000s such as Shelley Fisher-Fishkin, Amy Kaplan, John Carlos Rowe, or Donald Pease, to recent, critical evaluations of this approach. We will also consider the related concepts of hemispheric studies, border studies, studies of the Pacific Rim, and transatlantic studies. The seminar will host a number of guest lectures byprominent scholars in this context, such as Ralph Bauer (University ofMaryland), Winfried Fluck (FU Berlin), Claudia Sadowski-Smith (Arizona StateUniv.), and Andrei Markovits (University of Michigan).
