- In this seminar we will discuss books that have achieved an iconic status in American cultural and literary history – books such as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well as Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends and Influence People and the McKinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953. Some of these books are said to have changed public opinion in fundamental ways; others have provoked controversial public discussions and intellectual debates. Some of these books are considered unequivocal masterpieces, others were bestsellers in their own times. All of them, from today’s perspective, epitomize and document specific moments of US-American cultural and literary history – Stowe’s novel was crucial for the abolition of slavery, Thoreau started ecological thinking, and McKinsey, as shocked as some readers were by his study and its findings, initiated the sexual revolution, to single out only three of the larger movements and developments. For various reasons and in different discursive contexts, the ‘books that changed America’ are texts that reflect a complex US-American cultural and literary heritage.
