- This seminar provides an introduction to the field of masculinity studies from an American studies perspective. In recent years, social and cultural constructions of masculinity have become an important focus of gender studies and cultural studies alike. Talk about a (white) male ‘crisis’ and “the end of men” (H. Rosin) abounds and suggests that masculinity as a category might have lost/be losing its hegemonic status. We will examine how masculine identities intersect with and are shaped by other categories such as age, class, race, sexuality, or health. Scrutinizing a broad range of examples – from country music and hip hop to literature, Hollywood film, and TV series – we will critically discuss contemporary representations of masculinity in US-American culture.
