- Inhalt
- In the second half of the 20th century the US-American Christian marketplace has developed as a “parallel world of entertainment,” (Klaus Milich) where middle class evangelicals can buy and consume everything in an evangelical version. Simultaneously, debates around school prayer, abortion, and evolution have led some scholars and evangelicals alike to the assessment that the US is in the middle of a ‘culture war,’ which is defined by a religious/secular divide. This seminar provides an introduction to contemporary US-American evangelicalism, both as a strand of the US-American religious landscape as well as a marker of cultural difference. We will consider diverse phenomena such as apocalyptic adventure novels, religious romances, cultural practices like Christian fitness (yoga, bodybuilding) and sexual abstinence as well as (political) debates surrounding evangelical women’s activism.
