- Inhalt
- The experience of migration from the Caribbean to European or North American countries is among the most frequently explored themes in Caribbean fiction. The sense of estrangement and uprooting that such changing spatial environments cause is frequently described in terms of psychological ten-sion and self-estrangement. Throughout the course of the semester we will discuss a selection of Car-ibbean texts highlighting the changing perception of inter- and transcultural boundaries from the 1950s to the present day. The three novels by George Lamming, Jamaica Kincaid and Caryl Phillips indicate a succession from a traumatic sense of exile which can be regarded as the prevalent mood in early postcolonial texts towards a more ambivalent attitude in the second generation of Caribbean postwar writing. Finally, more recent tendencies in contemporary writing suggest a further transition towards cosmopolitan identities that more and more obviously defy descriptions in terms of traditional under-standings of nationality.
