Ever since Edgar Allen Poe's gothic fiction, the ghost story has become an established narrative genre in American literature. Even if we can define general characteristics of ghost stories, their form and function have changed over time. In this seminar, we will look at ghosts in contemporary North American literature and investigate their particular role in representative texts. Often, the presence of ghosts is connected to trauma and memory and reveals how characters are haunted by their past; at times the ghostly presence also draws attention to radical cultural difference as experienced by the protagonists. In our discussions, we will analyze the ghost as a cultural code signifying uncanny encounters of otherness in the age of postmodernity.
