- From gun control debates to the alleged size of Donald Trump’s penis, from the sexist corporate culture of Silicon Valley to the rape epidemic on college campuses, from homophobic and misogynist tendencies in rap, country, and rock music to GamerGate to depictions of blatant chauvinism and machismo on television and in film: toxic masculinity seems to be an almost ubiquitous phenomenon of contemporary US politics, society, and culture. In this seminar, we will scrutinize this phenomenon from various perspectives. Drawing on insights from masculinity studies and feminism, we will try to assess this normalization of an all-too stereotypical masculinity vis-à-vis a supposed ‘crisis of masculinity’ and the idea of a (post-9/11) backlash. And analyzing a broad range of examples of (fairly) recent US-American cultural productions and other ‘texts’, we will critically discuss contemporary representations of masculinity in US-American culture and their functions.
