Proseminar Politics & Culture: Public Feeling in America

Dozent/in
Prof. Dr. Heike Paul

Angaben
Proseminar
2 SWS, ECTS-Studium, Sprache Englisch
Zeit und Ort: Mo 10:15 - 11:45, C 303

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
This seminar is for those students specializing in American Studies and for those in General Studies who need credits in a "kulturwissenschaftliches Proseminar". In American Studies it fulfils the “Politics & Culture Proseminar” requirement (Modul 201; 5 ECTS-points), in General Studies the "Proseminar Culture" (Zwischenmodul II) requirement (Modul 211; 6 ECTS).

Inhalt
This seminar analyzes expressions of affect and emotion in American public life and in the political field. Contrary to the common assumption that the public sphere is rational, characterized by sober reflection and contemplation as well as by issue-oriented politics, we will see that emotions play a major role in much of political life. “Public feeling” describes the somewhat paradoxical situation that something as private and intimate as feeling is expressed and shared openly and that it can, time and again, also be used for political ends. We will address questions such as: Which public feelings are regularly featured in national commemorations, rituals, performances, speeches? What is their function for affirming or contesting a national or group-based identity? What kind of occasions do we associate with feelings such as patriotism, anger, mourning, joy, pain, and (romantic) love in US public life? What are the positive and negative effects of a highly emotionalized, even sentimental, political discourse in a democracy? Material will consist of various kinds of representations including texts (presidential speeches, song lyrics), visual culture and film (protest art, commercials, photography), and cultural practices (rituals and ceremonies).

Further information will be posted on studon by the beginning of the semester.
