- Inhalt
- What circumstances of literary and theatrical production lead to a late rise of the American Play in the early 20th century? How does it emerge as a distinct genre and on what aesthetic traditions is it based? We will investigate how the American Drama evolves from 19th century precedents of commercial stage productions and from European lines of modernist drama. We will discuss how it both draws on and emancipates itself from influences such as Strindberg, Chekhov, Ibsen, Realist and Naturalist tendencies as well as Expressionist Theater and the Theater of the Absurd. The Course combines the perspective of literary historical survey with selected detailed readings and will practice the use of analytical tools and categories.
