- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Das HS Literature gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
• BA English and American Studies (neu): Hauptmodul A. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul II)
• Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Hauptmodul L-GYM Literature. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul Literature)
• Alte Studiengänge (Studienbeginn vor WS 07/08): Hauptstudium. (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenprüfung)
Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs auch eine "Independent Study Group" angeschlossen.
- Inhalt
- What is the function of a literary text? What constitutes its literariness and how, precisely, does it relate to the social world? These are questions fundamental to any literary analysis, but they are seldom addressed explicitly. This course will discuss these issues in relation to three recent American novels: Richard Powers' Generosity, Toni Morrison's A Mercy and Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex. Conceiving of literary texts neither as mimetic mirrors of social realities nor as timeless masterpieces, but as historically and culturally situated argumentative processes, class discussions will address the theoretical, terminological and methodological basics and problems connected with the notion of literary function. As part of the course, students will participate in the international conference "Ideas of Order: Narrative Patterns in the Novels of Richard Powers" which takes place in Erlangen on November, 26.-28. The course ends in late January 2011.
In order to receive credit for the course, a final 20-page paper is due by March 15.

- Students are expected to buy the following novels: Richard Powers, Generosity: An Enhancement (2009; NY: Picador 2010); Toni Morrison, A Mercy (2008; NY: Vintage 2009); and Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex (NY: Picador, 2002). Essays on the notion of literary function by Winfried Fluck, Hubert Zapf, Marion Gymnich and others will be available on StudOn at the beginning of the semester. As an introduction to the course you are encouraged to read the following essay that will be available on StudOn by the end of July: Marion Gymnich and Ansgar Nünning, "Funktionsgeschichtliche Ansätze: Terminologische Grundlagen und Funktionsbestimmungen von Literatur", Funktionen von Literatur, ed. Gymnich and Nünning (Trier: WVT, 2005) 3-27.
