Together, we will visit several theatre and performance festivals such as “Wiener Festwochen”, “Theater der Welt” in Mannheim and “foreign affairs” in Berlin. In addition to that, we will discover the theatre scene based in the region of Erlangen-Nuremberg (“ARENA … of the young arts”; “Bayerische Theatertage”, Tafelhalle amongst others).

Analytical reflections about historical contexts of and artistic claims made by festivals and artists as well as a look into cultural policies (politics of funding) will help us understand how the German theatre system works. However, critical discussions about performances and theatre practices will be at the heart of our work.

Please note: This class will NOT take place on a weekly basis. The seminar sessions will depend on the respective dates of the festivals. Detailed information about the terms will be handed out at the first meeting held on April 29th.
