- Judith Butler's performance theory is based on the assumption that both gender and sex are the result of social construction. In our everyday lives we are used to preserving our gender ratio by pretending that we perfectly fulfill our social role either as man or as woman. According to Butler, we condemn every gender and sexual identification that deviates from this binary model.
Based on an open concept of theatre as well as Butler’s theory, our discussion will focus on several historical phenomena: from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s famous “Letter to M. D’Alembert on Spectacles” to the social role of “Actresses as Working Women” (Tracy Davis) and performances by feminist artists in the 1970’s like VALIE EXPORT or Annie Sprinkle up to contemporary strip shows and Laurie Penny’s pamphlet “Meat Market”. These diverse reflections on and manifestations of gender and sexuality will allow us to study ways and forms of the representation and creation of sex and gender. Taking a closer look at terms like intimacy, eroticism and desire, we will try to analyze which significance they might bear in the context of gender theory. Eventually, we will turn our attention to the reflection of the relationship between theatre, society and gender.
