Inhalt
These lectures will take the student through the major topics of Indian philosophy by first introducing the basic features of Indian philosophy along with the meaning and the scope of different philosophical traditions in India. We begin with a brief survey of the historical development of philosophical thought in ancient India from Veda to Vedanta. This will include a discussion of the outlines of Vedic philosophy and religion. Then we will give an overview over the Upanishads teachings. Next we will turn to a discussion of the nature of desireless work according to Bhagavadgita by introducing the nature of war ethics and fundamental principles of the humanitarian approach in the battled field in ancient India. We will discuss philosophy schools like the yoga systems of Patanjali, the Charvaka system or the Indian materialism as well as the fundamentals of Buddhism. The final part of the lecture deals with ethical doctrines in Indian philosophy by introducing the nature and the ultimate purpose of Indian value concepts and the ethical teaching of Buddhism (Four Noble Truths, The Eightfold Path) and Jainism (ahimsa and multi-faceted reality) including how these ethical theories are applied to personal, social, political and ecological concerns in the current social order.
These lectures will be given in English.
