- Globalisation has significantly increased the level of economic and security-related interdependencies between East Asian states since the 1970s. At the same time nationalism in both Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand vs. Cambodia; Muslim Identity in Malaysia and Indonesia) as well as Northeast Asia (i.e. China vs. Japan, Korea) has risen. This development can roughly be explained by the rise of China, the end of the cold war and processes of democratisation and liberalisation in the region. Against this background and based on respective theories this seminar seeks to elaborate on manifestations of the “old nationalism” (early 20th century until the end of Western colonial rule in the 1960s) and the “new nationalism” mentioned above. By doing so we will try to identify and compare causal pattern of nationalist occurrences in East Asia.
